Wine

Hugh Hamilton Wines Pure Black Shiraz is an ambitious project that celebrates the Hamilton family's winemaking history.

The first Hamilton – Richard Hamilton – planted grape vines in South Australia in 1837. In homage to those vines, which arrived in Australia coated in wax, the top third of the Pure Black Shiraz bottle is dipped in black wax.

The highest grade McLaren Vale sites are selected. When selecting fruit, the vines are considered by individual rows rather than whole vineyards. Harvesting is in small batches.

The berries are passed over a special sorting table to reduce stems, then crushed in small parcels. Open fermentation occurs with gentle hand plunging and hand racking. The wine matures in only the best French oak barrels.

Over 350 barrels are tasted. Of those only the very finest are chosen for the final wine.

Inky red black, Hugh Hamilton Wines Pure Black Shiraz is brooding and powerful. The texture is both firm and structural, with the fruit and length providing intrinsic balance.

It demands time in the bottle. Cellaring potential is 20 years.
